A road-map to white dwarf pollution: Tidal disruption, eccentric grind-down, and dust accretion

چکیده

A significant fraction of white dwarfs show metal lines indicative pollution with planetary material but the accretion process remains poorly understood. The main aim this paper is to produce a road-map illustrating several potential routes for dwarf and link these paths observational outcomes. Our proposed road begins tidal disruption scattered asteroid formation highly eccentric disc wide range fragment sizes. Accretion fragments by Poynting-Robertson (PR) drag alone too slow explain observed rates. Instead, in second stage, processes including differential apsidal precession cause high-velocity collisions between fragments. Large asteroids more when they disrupt, causing rapid grind-down generating short intense bursts dust production, whereas smaller grind down over longer periods time. In final collisionally produced circularises accretes onto via forces. We that optically thin PR produces large infrared (IR) excesses rate exceeds 10^7 g/s. hypothesise around accreting at high rate, no detected excess, circularisation requires enhanced - instance due presence gas near disc's pericentre.

Tidal dissipation and evolution of white dwarfs around massive black holes: an eccentric path to tidal disruption

Awhite dwarf (WD) captured into a high-eccentricity orbit around amassive black hole (MBH) may undergo many pericentre passages before tidal disruption. During these passages, the tidal potential of the MBH excites internal oscillations or waves in the WD, and the dissipation of these oscillations can significantly influence the physical properties of the WD prior to its disruption. We calculat...

Down with road dust.

Background: Despite the growth of biomedical research in South Africa, there are few insights into the operation of Research Ethics Committees (RECs) in this setting. We investigated the composition, operations and training needs of health RECs in South Africa against the backdrop of national and international guidelines. Methods: The 12 major health RECs in South Africa were surveyed using sem...

Evolution of Thick Accretion Disks Produced by Tidal Disruption Events

Geometrically thick disks may form after tidal disruption events, and rapid accretion may lead to short flares followed by long-term, lower-level emission. Using a novel accretion disk code which relies primarily on global conservation laws and the assumption that viscosity is everywhere positive, a broad range of physically allowed evolutionary sequences of thick disks is investigated. The mai...

Non-dissipative tidal synchronization in accreting binary white dwarf systems

We study a non-dissipative hydrodynamical mechanism that can stabilize the spin of the accretor in an ultracompact double white dwarf (WD) binary. This novel synchronization mechanism relies on a non-linear coupling between tides and the uniform (or rigid) rotation mode, which spins down the background star. The essential physics of the synchronization mechanism is summarized as follows. As the...
